Why Caster Inspection Matters for Workshop Tool Carts

For manufacturing enterprises and maintenance institutions using mobile workstation equipment, caster failure is one of the most common field complaints. Step-by-Step Inspection Process

Step 1: Batch Identification and Documentation Check

Before physical sampling, the quality team verifies:

  • Supplier delivery note against our purchase order (caster model, wheel diameter, bearing type, quantity).
  • Material certificates for wheel core (typically nylon or polyurethane) and bracket steel grade.
  • RoHS or REACH compliance documentation if the batch is designated for electronics manufacturing customers.

Checkpoint: Any batch missing material traceability documents is quarantined and returned to the supplier without sampling.

Step 2: Sampling Rule Application

We apply a fixed sampling ratio based on batch size:

Step 3: Dimensional Verification

Each sampled caster is measured for:

  • Wheel diameter tolerance: ±1 mm from specification (commonly 100 mm, 125 mm, or 150 mm for our tool cart range).
  • Overall height: Must match the design envelope of the cart base frame to maintain ergonomic working height (e.g., 850 mm total height for the 4-Drawer Tool Cart including 500 mm pegboard).
  • Mounting plate hole spacing: Verified against our C-type cold-rolled steel frame drilling template.

Exception: If two or more samples fall outside dimensional tolerance, the batch is escalated to engineering review rather than automatic rejection, as tooling wear may be correctable.

Step 4: Static Load Test

Sampled casters are mounted on a test rig and subjected to a static load:

  • Standard tool cart casters: 100 kg per caster held for 10 minutes, then inspected for bracket deformation and wheel flat-spotting.
  • Heavy-duty workbench casters: 250 kg per caster held for 10 minutes.

After load removal, the caster must rotate freely with no visible permanent deformation exceeding 0.5 mm on the bracket.

Step 5: Brake Function Test

For casters with braking mechanisms:

  • The brake is engaged under 80 kg load.
  • A horizontal force of 20 kg is applied to the cart frame.
  • Pass criterion: No wheel rotation or cart displacement exceeding 5 mm.

This test simulates real workshop conditions where a loaded tool cart must remain stationary on slightly uneven epoxy or concrete floors.

Step 6: Swivel and Rolling Resistance Check

  • Swivel resistance: The caster must rotate 360° smoothly under 10 kg vertical load without binding.
  • Rolling resistance: Measured on a standard steel plate surface; the force required to initiate rolling must not exceed 3% of the applied load.

Limitations of This Inspection Protocol

This incoming inspection catches manufacturing defects and specification deviations. It does not simulate:

  • Long-term fatigue over thousands of rolling cycles (covered by separate endurance testing for new supplier qualification).
  • Chemical exposure to cutting fluids or solvents (requires customer-specific material selection at the design stage).
  • Extreme temperature environments outside the standard 5°C–45°C workshop range.

For customers in specialized environments—such as automotive parts manufacturers using aggressive coolants or electronics factories with strict ESD requirements—caster material selection must be confirmed during the workstation planning phase, not at incoming inspection.
